The banking sector emerged as an outlier when the rest of India Inc witnessed a slowdown in earnings in FY23. The combined net profit of listed public and private sector banks was up 39.4 per cent year-on-year (YoY) last financial year and their share in India's gross value added (GVA) or gross domestic product (GDP) at factor cost rose to a record high of nearly 1 per cent up, from 0.8 per cent a year ago. Listed banks' combined net profit grew to Rs 2.36 trillion in FY23, from Rs 1.69 trillion a year ago. In comparison, India GVA at current prices was up 15.2 per cent YoY at Rs 247 trillion in FY23; it was around Rs 214 trillion a year ago.
State-run Canara Bank on Monday reported its fourth-quarter net profit rose 12 per cent from a year earlier, driving its shares higher in a subdued market.

Coal India Limited's (CIL) October-December quarter of financial year 2023-24 (Q3FY24) results have beaten the Street's estimates. Revenue rose 3 per cent year-on-year (Y-o-Y) to Rs 36,200 crore, led by higher volumes and better realisation from Fuel-Supply Agreement (FSA) coal. The blended average selling price (ASP) was down 6 per cent Y-o-Y to Rs 1,727 per tonne, and the FSA ASP was up 3 per cent Y-o-Y to Rs 1,532 per tonne.

Weakness in HDFC Bank's net interest margin (NIM) might have bottomed out in the July-September quarter (Q2-FY24), analysts said on Tuesday, as most of the merger-related one-time adjustments have been done. Pfizer Ltd has posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 759.40 million for the year ended November 30, 2002 where as the net profit was at Rs 474.90 million for the year ended November 30, 2001.
Although the company's net profit in the corresponding quarter the previous fiscal stood at Rs 448.6 crore, MSI said the figures were not comparable due to the adoption of a new depreciation policy, which has shortened cycles for its equipment and tooling assets. Total income, net of excise stood at Rs 5069.9 crore (Rs 50.69 billion) during the quarter, it said.
The erosion in the standalone net profit is mainly on account of higher provisioning against bad loans, operating expenses, including employee cost besides tax outgo of over Rs 900 crore (Rs 9 billion).
